THIS WEEK IN ...

1981

Two and a half years after they were found in a crawl space, the remains of nine unidentified victims of John Wayne Gacy are buried. The service is held at the Abbey in Oak Ridge-Glen Oak Cemetery in west suburban Hillside, but the bodies are buried in undisclosed sites scattered around the city so as not to create a monument to the serial killer.

Robin Meredith, an energetic performer with a strong folk influence, and Linda and Joey Malone, sisters with a unique blend of rhythm and blues and beautifully harmonized love songs, appear at the womyn-only Mountain Moving Coffee House in the church basement at 1655 W. School St.

Some of the smaller gay bars at this time were Dickie's, 674 W. Diversey; Gazebo, a disco at 188 N. Wacker Drive; the Good Times Tavern, 3237 W. Armitage, a Latin disco run by Ramon; and Dago Rose's Hideaway at 905 W. Belmont.

1983

KeepHers INVITES YOU to "The First Dance Till Ya Drop Party." Hundreds of women. Hot music. The dance takes place at Metro, 3730 N. Clark St. Tickets are $5/$6. You can buy tickets at the Jane Addams Bookstore, Lady Bug, Swan Club and Women & Children First.

Chicago's dens of iniquity include the Gold Coast, 501 N. Clark St., which this week holds a leather raffle; the Unicorn bathhouse, 3246 N. Halsted, with $2 lockers ALL NIGHT LONG; Man's Country, 5015 N. Clark St., where the sun deck is now open seven days a week; Ira's Male Box, 53 W. Hubbard, provides Chicago's hottest Erotika and a free bottle of poppers with a $20 purchase; hot male-on-male videos can be rented at the Banana King, 955 W. Addison; and the Video Clinic at 5900 W. Fullerton now has gay video.

1989

In the bars this week Berlin holds it fifth annual Pet Costume Contest ... "dogs, cats, goldfish, rabbits, monkeys, lions, tigers, etc., etc., etc. First prize $100, second prize $50, third prize $25; Cheeks, 2730 N. Clark, holds its Miss Cheeks contest featuring 1988-89 winner Tonette as MC; U-Bahn, 3406 N. Sheffield, goes 1950s and '60s for a Sock Hop - dress the part and your first drink is FREE!; Tuesdays are Leather Night at the Granville Anvil; and it's the opening of the short-lived disco, Rage, 5006 N. Clark.

Studs Terkel devotes his one-hour radio program on WFMT 98.7 FM to the Windy City Gay Chorus. His guests include Richard Garrin, founding director of the chorus, Ryan Johnson, chairman of the board, and Armand Cerbone, vice chairman.

2002

"Join us for an evening of pure imagination ... 'Wonka Ball '02: Return to the Chocolate Factory'" is a benefit for About Face Theatre and About Face Youth Theatre. It takes place at the Museum of Contemporary Art Warehouse, 1747 W. Hubbard.

The newly reconstructed version of Judy Garland's A Star Is Born is shown at the Gene Siskel Film Center, 164 N. State St., and Chicago Park District Movies in the Park presents The Wizard of Oz at Portage Park, 4100 N. Long.

In the bars this week DJ James Amato from Milwaukee joins resident DJs Christopher Robin and John Jackson at Berlin, 954 W. Belmont; DJ Gloria works her magic at Star Gaze, 5419 N. Clark; Cherise Pretty Runs For Royalty at Bobby Love's, 3729 N. Halsted; the Kentucky Stallions strut their mouthwatering stuff at Madrigals, 5316 N. Clark; ChicagoBeef.com presents Strip Search Sundays at Jackhammer, 6406 N. Clark; and Stella Productions hosts the Miss Edge Contest at the Edge, 13126 S. Western, Blue Island.
