Wayward Pines

In his first novel of the "Wayward Pines" trilogy, writer Blake Crouch readily admits that the 1990's cult prime-time show "Twin Peaks" had a large influence on his writing techniques and ideas. The same holds true for "Wayward Pines" the TV show, which recently aired on the Fox channel as a supernatural event series.

It seems like the show just left the air and fans are getting treated to this simple 10-episode DVD set.

"Wayward Pines" stars Matt Dillon as Ethan Burke, a Secret Service agent who wakes up in Wayward Pines, Idaho with no recollection of how he got there. His character spends the season sleuthing to find out why he's in Wayward Pines and the shady science fiction happenings of the town and its inhabitants.

The premiere episode sets an eerie tone and was directed by M. Night Shyamalan; it proves that the director of "The Sixth Sense" still has some good tricks up his sleeves. Unfortunately, this eerie tone dissipates to the dreaded TV format where certain characters change their mind and feelings about prior events in subsequent episodes. A case in point, the nurse played by the fantastic Melissa Leo, plays evil in the first half of the season and suddenly has a heart in latter shows.

So "Wayward Pines" is an uneven yet intriguing show. But where is the high-definition Blu-ray edition? It's not on the market at this time, a disappointing feat for those who like to watch their favorite science fiction shows in a vivid format.

Methinks this "Wayward Pines" edition was a rush job on the part of 20th Century Fox. With only 2 brief special features, "Where Paradise Is Home" and "Creating a Mythology," the DVD set is disappointing.
