What To Expect When You’re Expecting
"What to Expect When You’re Expecting" pushes too hard to deliver. Some of the stars, those who have clearly carried a film on their own (Jennifer Lopez, Dennis Quaid, Cameron Diaz, Elizabeth Banks) are bundled so tightly into this film, that they don’t create any real spark. However, there is an actress who keeps popping up in several films, by the name of Rebel Wilson who catches her moments given and comically lights up the screen in her interactions with Elizabeth Banks. Comedian Chris Rock also brings cynical smiles with his quick wit as an advice-giving daddy of four.
The scenario showcases five couples in various degrees of relationships and/or marriage who come to term with the eminent reality of parenthood. Cue the "morning sickness!" There is the constant cinematic switch-up of going from each expectant couple to expectant couple and from "baby" bump to the ultimate delivery.
The film never really decides if it is going for the comedic realism of new life... or the heartbreaking tragedy of losing it. This division of direction is jolting, somber and quite real when combined side-by-side with the one-dimensional characterizations provided. Look to "What to Expect When You’re Expecting" for a few "tug at the heartstrings" moments and a few honest laughs, while taking deep breaths to remain calm as the women experience the strain, stress, joy, worry, pride, jealousy, drama and exuberance of being pregnant. We all know giving birth can be quite painful, yet again... so can the played-out and stereotypical qualities of motherhood delivered here.
