Keep that umbrella handy. Despite stormy skies, Miami-Dade County’s Domestic Partnership registry kicks off on Monday, August 18th. Registration is an important step. Doing so entitles domestic partners to visitation rights at healthcare, correctional and juvenile facilities.

It also extends heath insurance and employee benefits to domestic partners of county employees.

Any Miami-Dade County employee who is a party to a registered domestic partnership relationship can elect to select insurance coverage for his or her domestic partner or their children in the same manner as an employee may elect coverage for a spouse or unmarried dependant child.

The Miami-Dade County Commission approved the ordinance at their meeting on May 20, 2008 in a historic 8 to 4 vote.

Registration will take place at Miami-Dade County Consumer Services Department. The address is 140 West Flagler Street, 9th floor, Miami, FL 33130.

Applications can also be accepted in the mail. For more details, go to http://www.miamidade.gov/csd/domestic_partnership.asp.
