Fall Fashion: Miami Style

Miami may not be the first shopping destination that comes to mind when outfitting your wardrobe for fall, but as an international fashion capital with year-round events, Miami is a go-to destination for the latest styles any time of year.

Miami Beach International Fashion Week, the largest Latin American and international fashion event in the U.S., boasts more than 50 of the world’s top fashion designers presenting their latest collections on the catwalk each March before hundreds members of the international press.

But we still have fall, so take a look at Miami’s fashion scene and some of the trends available this season, which include plaids, the motorcycle jacket, skinny jeans and the return of the thick-soled shoe.


Lincoln Road and The Design District

Lincoln Road
Designed by famed architect Morris Lapidus (who also designed the Fontainebleu Hotel) in the 1960s, Lincoln Road has become synonymous with shopping, dining and nightlife. This pedestrian-only retail destination features major brands such as Original Penguin, 7 for All Mankind, Adidas Y-3, BASE, and Cubavera and dozens more.

"Original Penguin is catering to the Miami Guy that has traded the beach side boardwalk for the chic poolside," says Brand Product Manager Erica Feldenkreis, "We always want to ensure our guy is fashionable but comfortable in his own skin, so we ensure that the colors and prints can be worn at any place, even long after the sun is down."

The Design District
Master planners Duany Plater-Zyberk with the help of a team of architects are turning a once overlooked area into a vibrant destination for design, fashion, art and more. If you’re looking for luxury retailers such as Louis Vuitton, Prada and Hermès (and perhaps a piece of art for that blank wall), this is where you need to be.

"Miami’s fashion sense is unique due to the influx and mixture of different cultures and backgrounds," says Dune Ivan of Apt 606. "The Design District has given Miami a little taste of Soho in a sense. There’s a good core of high-end luxury fashion mixed with art galleries, restaurants and inspiring interior design shops, it’s something completely different than what South Beach offers and exactly what Miami has been missing all along."


I On the District

Befitting Miami’s Design District location, I On the District showcases eyewear from across the globe, highlighting unusual designs that are as novel as the store name itself. Handmade pieces include UK brand Cutler & Gross; Parisian designers Thierry Lasry and Christian Roth; Oliver Goldsmith; and the notoriously edgy Chrome Hearts. If you’re looking for cutting-edge styles, discover these brands:

Chrome Hearts
Founded in 1988 by motorcycle enthusiast Richard Stark, this season’s Chrome Hearts eyewear features fleur-de-lys, ornately designed crosses, daggers, and floral-like designs-a perfect blend of edge and romance.

Mykita
Made in Berlin, Mykita’s sleek fall designs offer comfort and longevity, featuring stainless steel, custom surfacing, lacquer coatings and industrial inset patented hinges.

Christian Roth
A fashion industry leader for more than 25 years, Roth partnered with Eric Domege in 1983 to establish an eyewear line. Latest styles take a Technicolor look at Jackie O.

Retro Specs
What’s old is new again as this eyewear restoration company refurbishes timeless pieces from the 1870s through the 1970s. With spectacular details of buffalo horn, gold, diamond-inlays, pearl nose pads, and original vintage hinges, Retro Specs is at the top of the high-end market.

Lincoln Road
Whether you’re people-watching, shopping or enjoying the sidewalk cafes, bars and galleries, this pedestrian-only promenade is at the epicenter of what’s happening in South Beach.

Miami Design District
This is the site of Miami’s next big retail boom. According to The Miami Herald, 50 new stores will open in the compact area by next fall and nearly 120 in total by 2015. "Our real focus right now is to solidify the luxury retail offerings, so that in addition to great design, art and restaurants, you’ll have the most comprehensive collection of luxury fashion and jewelry in South Florida," said Craigs Robins to the Herald.

Ocean Drive & Collins Avenue
Just a few steps from the beach, take some time out of the sun to appreciate 30 designer stores ranging from Armani and Versace to Kenneth Cole and Tommy Hilfiger.

Española Way & Washington Avenue
Late-night shopping binge? Shops are open late in this Mediterranean-inspired enclave of vintage shops, boutiques and galleries.

Bal Harbour Shops
This lush, tropical setting is the perfect backdrop for retailers like Prada and Gucci as well as anchor department stores Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus.

Aventura Mall
More than 2.7 million square feet of retail space will keep you occupied at one of the top five highest grossing malls in the country, including 300 specialty retailers.

Dadeland Mall
Home to Florida’s largest Macy’s, the mall recently opened a new wing and five additional restaurants with outdoor seating overlooking downtown Dadeland.

Dolphin Mall
Just when you think the well has run dry, head to Dolphin Mall, a "retail value shopping center." For those in the know, that means outlet mall with access to deep discounts on brands like Coach, Michael Kors, Ralph Lauren and more.
