After returning from a cruise on the legendary Rhine, I’m happily considering trips to other iconic waterways such as the Danube for next year. Sure, there were a few wrinkles, but they didn’t take away from what I found was a charming experience.

The cuckoo-clock, the characteristic Bollenhut hat and the Black Forest gateau: that is what makes the Black Forest world-famous. The Black Forest is also synonymous with an impressive landscape, a natural paradise.

Switzerland is a country roughly the size of the state of Maryland, with a population less than New York City - and yet, what an inordinate amount of influence this one country has had on European and global culture.
